The leaves have all curled and gone dry. I'm not great at gardening problems. It was really healthy one day next day it was looking sad

It'll be wind or sun, or a combination. That tends to fry the foliage. It'll recover though, especially if you re locate it so that it isn't getting full on mid day sun for long periods.

The soil level is very low in the pot though. That won't be ideal for it either. If you can take it out, and add more soil/compost in the pot, then put it back in, that will help. The soil level should be around an inch from the top of the pot.  :)

It only gets sun in the morning for about 3hrs. It's very sheltered were it is. It's been in same place (new compost and pot) for around 18mths. Never no issues.

It's very typical of sun and/or wind damage. Morning sun can also affect them adversely, especially in spring after a frost, or in hot spells in summer.
If it's never had the soil amended, or refreshed/added to, that won't help either. 18 months is a long time in the same growing medium, and compost is no use for a shrub or tree long term in a pot. They need a soil based medium.
Anything potted needs far more attention than in the ground.
If it's dried out at any time too, that isn't ideal. They need pretty consistent moisture, and good drainage.
