I generally plant all my bulbs in pots (using the cheapest compost I can find, it's just a medium for them to grow roots into) and then plant them in their final positions in the spring when I can see where the spaces are.

It's particularly useful if you haven't got the perennials as you can put them all in at the same time. It also means you can have a nice bulb display in spring by grouping pots together, and have them near your windows where you might see them more often, especially the very early ones
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....
