Leyland or Thuja

Hello All,
I have a hedge and I'd like to know if it's a leyland or a Thuja. Can anyone notice anything from the leaves? thank you

I thought it was thuja 😳.
Does it have a distinctive smell when you crush it ?
  • thank you for your responses. I remember when i trimmed it, it has a strong smell of something, quite pleasant. I will smell it again tomorrow. do they have different smells?

    Another vote for Thuja.
    Clay soil - Cheshire/Derbyshire border

I play with plants and soil and sometimes it's successful

A pleasant fruity smell is the acid -test for Thuja.  Also green growth on old brown wood.

  • If it grows 6ft plus each year it is leylandii.

    Looks like Thuja to me.

Smells citrusy and pungent when trimmed?

Send me a piece. If I get a rash on my arm within minutes it’s Thuja 😂

I also think it's Thuja, based on the fresh green colour - Leylandii is a darker green, often with a blue hue.
    Wirral. Sandy, free draining soil.

Back in the '60s my brother-in-law planted Thuja plicata atrovirens, then claimed to be the fastest growing conifer.

Thuja has quite a distinct smell, possibly "citrus like" is my best description. From your description  l would say it's definitely thuja.
To be honest l've no idea if Leylandii has a smell when you cut it.
