The slugs' revenge

So there I was, goodly and quietly doing a morning slug pick yesterday, when I had the most excruciating pain in my lower back. It took me several minutes before I could move at all. The only other time I've felt pain like it was when I came off a pony I was backing and fractured a vertebrae (which A&E didn't find at the time because they didn't really look).

To cut a long story short, I went to the doctor yesterday evening who was concerned it might be another fracture (apparently it can happen so simply if you have osteoporosis), and asked me to get x-rays done. Done today and there is no fracture so the likely diagnosis is a herniated disc. It's really a matter of time to let it heal.

Even with pain killers I still can't stand upright yet, so definitely no slug picking for some time to come. I can almost hear them giggling away, mouths full of courgette.

Oh dear @NormandyLiz, sending sympathy. I hope the pain eases soon.

Not good @NormandyLiz.  I hope things ease soon and you can be more comfy and mobile.

  • Thank you, @Busy-Lizzie and @Obelixx. I hope so too, I'm booked on a cuttings day at a local garden, when they not only teach you to take cuttings properly but you also get to chop bits off their collection to take home with you, and I really want to make that (9th Sept)

I sympathise @NormandyLiz  Once you get to 28 everything starts to tweak!!  I came away from my rheumatologist today with Celebrex as well as Dalfagan Codeine - which I will take "in case".

That's interesting @tui34.  No-one's ever suggested Celebrex for my arthritic bits and I've only been given the Dafalgan with Codeine for post knee op pain relief.   In Belgium we could buy it over the counter till 2013 but now, as in France, a prescription is needed.

I believe in the UK it's still possible to get Solpadeine from a pharmacy without prescription.

Evening @Obelixx  It was my sister who lives in Queenstown NZ who suggested I ask about Celebrex - of course I have the generic, but my rhumotologist was quite forthcoming because it doesn't work on the stomach as do most anti-inflammatories.  The chemist said - best to take with food - just in case.  I will wait and see how this infiltration works out after 48hours and the rest of the month.....  I will eventually have to have a knee and hip replacement -in the meantime ......

Good luck @tui34.  My last lot of infiltrations didn't work tho the first lot did well for about 18 months.   I asked my GP if I could please have a new knee and he referred me, but only after I explained I'd already had to give up walking the dogs cos of the uneven terrain round here and did not want to have to give up dancing.

He was a sports medicine specialist so agreed.  The first time I asked he said I was too young and I'd been 27 for some time already.

  • 28? When was that? I can't quite remember...

Waiting for this morning's Dafalgan Codine to kick in, and I'm wondering what I do after tomorrow as I've been given it for 3 days. I don't know if it's connected but I feel a bit giddy this morning too. Back to the doctor I think.
