Hypericum rust and what to do please?

CopperdogCopperdog Posts: 617
Should I dig this out and cut my losses? Every spring I cut them down to around 10 inches and new growth is promising but we always end up like this. I have peonies nect to it etc and wonder if this affects other shrubs nearby or is harmless and just unsightly? Thankyou

Is it rust or is it naturally dying ready for winter.
You can cut it down now and get rid of the offending growth.
I cut mine down now because I don’t want it to seed everywhere.

Hi @Lyn it’s def rust as it started early June. I usually like seeing it stand in winter as structure but I know what you mean! They do seed everywhere and I have quite a few plants. They all get sone rust on them to varying degrees but this has been pretty bad with orange stems and flopping. How much do you cut down to pre winter and then would you cut again in spring a little lower? Many thanks for your help btw

I cut the whole thing down to the ground in the autumn. Right or wrong?  I don’t know but it works and comes up fresh next year.  And everywhere else 😀
