Moving shrubs and trees in September

I am moving allotment sites and want to take some of the currant bushes and a small apple tree I’ve planted with me. All went in in the last year.  I have to move by end September - know it’s not ideal as plants won’t be dormant. Any tips for to help make sure they survive?

Water them thoroughly at least an hour before you dig them out and preferably th eday before too.  Take as much of the rootball as you can dig out and keep it covered during transport to reduce dehydration of the fine roots.   Plant as soon as possible or store in tubs and pots till you can.

Water well after planting and during dry spells if you don't get decent autumn rains.

If they're still in full leaf, think about thinning the stems to reduce stress on the roots.

In addition to the above, if you know where you're going to plant them, it's worth preparing your planting holes in your new allotment first so that you can get them planted as soon as you get there.
