Lilly

Jules1MJules1M Posts: 12
Hello, I was given a lilly plant for my birthday, the flowers are now dropping & I don't know what to do next.  Should I cut it back or does it just die back?  Also, when should I plant it outside?   Thank you.

There are many plants that are called a lily so could you post a photo of you plant so we can see what sort of lily you have.
Then we can offer the best advice :)

Hi @Jules1M - you can plant it out now, and it will die back over winter and come back in spring/early summer, assuming it's one that suits your climate and conditions. You can also give it a feed as it dies back, just to help build the bulbs back up.  :)
They like decent drainage, so make sure your soil is suitable in that respect. Heavy wet soil isn't ideal for them.
The bulbs should be planted quite deeply - around three times they're height. You may need to take a look at how deep it is in the pot.  :)

It does depend on the lily so you need to work out which you have.

Calla lilies - zantedeschia - are not hardy and need to be kept as houseplants, frost free.   https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/zantedeschia/growing-guide

Then there are the liliums - bulbous plants which are mostly hardy and can be grown in containers or in the ground if the soil and local climate are right - https://www.rhs.org.uk/container-gardening/lilies

And then there are others such as hesperanthus, amaryllis belladonna, zephyranthes which are all called lilies - https://www.rhs.org.uk/search?query=lily&referrerPageUrl=https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/zantedeschia/growing-guide&tabOrder=./index.html,plants,adviceGuidesVideo,links,faqs,gardens,membership,showsEvents&verticalUrl=index.html
