Is this an Acer?

Is this an Acer? It’s about 7ft tall. I saw it out walking the dog today. Beautiful colours in the sunshine. What variety might it be please? What is difference between acers and Japanese maples please

    Yes -  Acer is just the correct term for them  :)
    There are hundreds of varieties, so it would be hard to determine the actual variety, but that's a palmatum type - which just refers to the leaf shape. 
    Acer palmatum purpureum is the standard purple/red one [which it might be] there are cultivated varieties of that such as 'Bloodgood'. 
    It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

    Acer is the Latin generic name.

    Japanese maples are usually small-ish.  Norway maples and Sycamores can grow quite big.  Many varieties (too many?)
     location: Surrey Hills, England, ex-woodland acidic sand.
