I’m a big admirer of ‘I’m Sorry I Haven’t a Clue’ but am I on my own in finding Mornington Crescent tedious? I just think it is smugly arcane and get irritated by the central premise of the game which just passes me by.

Please don’t take offence if you’re ardent fans; I’m just curious to know if I am standing alone.

  • @BenCotto I never really got the true hang of it but when I was listening to it I was only 11/12 and living in Suffolk. Didn't have the first idea about the London Underground. Still found it entertaining though. I bought one of the treasuries of old episodes on Audible a few months back and up until last night I hadn't gotten round to listening to them. Took me right back to my childhood when I used to have my radio stuffed in my pillow and my ear on the speaker. Next thing you know I'll be buying old episodes of Hinge and Bracket.

@BenCotto … the central premise of it is that there isn’t one … it’s really just an excuse to be silly.

Yes, I realise that Dove. My irritation comes from the audience reaction which indicates a sort of acknowledgement they’re in a private club and are party to a joke that is understood only by those in the know. It just seems forced, and false.

It’s a bit like a double bluff .., it’s an acknowledgment that they’re being silly by … being silly …. and you either get that and enjoy it or you don’t. It’s about enjoying the ridiculous.. And if you don’t then it’s silly to be bothered isn’t it?

I don’t get slapstick comedy … but I don’t feel excluded by those that do. 😊

For me it’s sort of ‘self-referential’ … self-acknowledged ‘London types’  taking the pee out of the sort of London types (including themselves) who used to come to our country pubs at the weekend and talk loudly about the sort of London-centric things that they presumed we country dwellers knew nothing about … then they discovered that we were taking the pee out of them 😂

There was a French episode Mornington Croissant abd Scottish one. Morningside. Can't remember what the Welsh one was called.
    In London. Keen but lazy.

  • Sometimes the 'arcane' can be brought into play  with excellent results.
Don't spoil it - too late, perhaps - or we won't be able to utilise it  again.
    Tooting Bec, anyone?

I thought it was inspired but I fear you're correct about no longer being able to use it. I imagine business as usual will commence shortly.
