Have anyone tried it with just river sand as growing medium?
I really don't have a Good backyard. But used my balcony as container Gardening place. No stopping from my passion.

As rooting medium, Yes. Some is more free-draining than others.
I have also used fine seaside shingle of various particles sizes, chemical compostions and drainage rates. Well washed of course.
The practice is not always legal.
location: Surrey Hills, England, ex-woodland acidic sand.
