I know it can be problematic but  I was looking for something to bind the soil on a sloping bank and to stop the birds digging and throwing soil on the steps below! So far it has done the trick but it’s regularly under review in case it goes mad!
    Wirral. Sandy, free draining soil.

Now, this may be a daft qu, but would it grow up a pyramid support if the runners were tied in?  That would give me the metre height I would like.
  • @Plantminded - sounds ideal for that purpose.
@ViewAhead  You could always try it as 1 mt isn't that much if they have a good base to begin with but don't forget they are really "ground runners" so they may well peter out if they are just exposed to the air as such. You could end up with having to pinch out the tips regularly to get the growth/cover you require. Good luck anyway  :)

So, do the runners send down roots at intervals, like ivy or waldstenia ternata?

You could try ivy, a more interesting one like Hedera algeriensis 'Gloire De Marengo', I’ve got this growing up a half obelisk in shade.  It took a while to get going but is now about six foot high.

Snap - I do like Gloire de Marengo - big leaves and makes a good cover.

I do like ivy, but have quite a lot, some plain green and some variegated.  It would grow fine in that spot, albeit slowly.
