What is this plant ?

Any idea what this is ?
I'm just weeding one of my veg beds and have come across this particular plant. I swapped a trowel for a fork and it's still feels like it's well rooted.
I don't recall coming across this a few months ago when I thoroughly weeded the bed.
Thanks

Is there a plum or cherry tree nearby? It looks like one of the ones that spring up from the roots when they get damaged.
  • Thanks @fidgetbones
The previous owner planted a cherry tree about 15ft from this. It was a small, young tree that to my memory did not produce fruit. I cut it down to the ground several years ago and have never had any issues.

You are going to need to give it a good yank to get it out.
  • And that will be the end of it I assume ?

There may be more suckers appear from any remaining roots still in the ground … but now you’ll recognise them and can chop them off with a sharp hoe as soon as they appear. As long as none of the sucker growth is allowed to grow leaves that feed them the roots will die off eventually.

  • Many thanks @Dovefromabove.
