Banana variagated leaf

I have two Banana plants one is fine growing in a pot outside. The other one I put in the conservatory. After putting out a couple of leaves it then put out a variegated leaf that promptly curled and went brown on the edges. It also seemed to have little white mites which I have treated. I can't see another leaf forming, is it going to die or can I do something to help it?

This is just a shot in the dark but, could your banana plant have been scorched by the sunlight and heat in the conservatory? Also, a conservatory is the perfect place for pests to gather and attack plants as there are no predators to keep them in check. I'm sure your plant would be happier outside until the colder weather arrives. With a bit of luck and with fingers crossed, the plant should be okay if it is given a little bit of shade during the day and not subject to extreme weather.
  • Thanks Ceres. It hasn't really been too hot this year and we have blinds in the conservatory but I did have the same thought so I did put it outside and treated the bugs. It is still looking poorly and has not put out a new leaf and now the other leaves are looking a bit sad around the edges. The other plant that I purchased at the same time is fine. I am thinking if it survives until winter maybe chopping it down and next year it will be better.

    Fingers crossed it perks up.
  • Which type of banana is it?  If it's a Musa Basjoo, it will be fine outside.  Ours are actually in the ground and have been for quite a few years.  However, we are on the south coast so we don't have the very cold conditions that others have.  We used to cover ours up in the winter but don't anymore.  Potted bananas would be benefit from a spell outside in the summer and misting regularly will help with the bug problem.
  • They are both outside now. One is lovely and growing well. The poorly one was fine until it put out a single variegated leaf but that went brown around the edges and never looked well and no new leaves have formed. Now all the other leaves have gone brown around the edges. In a last ditch attempt to save it I have repotted into a larger pot and am keeping my fingers crossed but it isn't looking good.
