  Sounds like Chrysolina herbacea  aka the Mint Leaf Beetle or Green Mint Beetle

  AnniD, thanks, spot-on, tried to post a photo but found it difficult. We have a lot of shield bugs but have never seen  the nymphs before. I've tried all of the usual sites but I know I should have tried this forum first. All the experts in one place! Thanks again.
