I've never lost a plant to strangulation from bindweed,
Nor me.  Even quite soft-stemmed hosts, the bindweed just supports itself.  Strangulation is quite the wrong word.
Not strangulation agreed … but it can get so heavy that it swamps plants and drags them over  … and have you never seen Hedge Bindweed rampaging across a flowerbed while the gardener’s back was turned (holiday, illness, injury etc)? Within quite a short time those few reaching tendrils looking for support can form a mat under which smaller plants have no chance!

Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.
