Jasmine - how to thin-down

We have a lovely prolific flowering jasmine covering a seated area, it is very well established and so above the seated area there is a bulk of old wood/branches which keeps getting deeper and deeper with each year and gets old leaves caught up in it. Any advice on how to de-bulk it or thin it down some how without destroying it. Many thanks in advance.

Hi, I have a 20 + year old Jasmine which was getting quite deep and had a twiggy mass behind the leaves. I had to cut it back for a replacement fence earlier this year and thought it wouldn’t recover but it has. I think if you are going to cut it back there are particular times to do it depending when it flowers.  I’m going to go mine again next year to keep it in hand going forward. I’ve always been quite hesitant pruning it but had no choice this time. I’ll see if I can post a picture or two, I really thought it was too much but it is thriving now.I cut back to a branch that still had green leaves and cut back any old wood, took it off the trellis/support and tied it back again, then I had another go at cutting it back. Good luck.

Doesn’t it look terrible, it was about 7ft high and 2 1/2 fence panels wide before I pruned it.

When it went back up at the end of April and I was holding my breath to see if it would recover

Just to say, I’m no expert but this was my experience.
