When and how should I prune this rose?

Hi everyone,

I have a 3 year old David Austin rose - Crimson Shower. It has just flowered and actually there are still some flowers on it. It has suffered this year due to mildew I think.

When should I prune it and how much? At the moment it's looking a little bit straggly, if you know what I mean, with a few long branches emanating from a bushy centre. The long branches now extend far beyond the extremities of the attached photo.

Any help would be appreciated.

  • First of all this rose isn't a cultivar introduced by Austin it's a 1951 small rambler. It's  complicated as Austin's retail branch doesn't differentiate enough of widely available varieties and their own breeding efforts. I suppose it helps the bottom line.

The RHS has a good page on pruning advice on ramblers that should work with your rose, essentially they're done after flowering in late summer. So perfect time if those are the last few flowers of the season.

Hopefully this response will bump up your enquiry in case anyone else has this particular variety in their gardens.

  • Thanks, I will see if I can prune over the weekend.
