Mine have done well in terms of flowers this year but the foliage is lacking and they aren't as bushy as they often get - apparently, MG's absolutely love heat and sunshine and quite poor soil for the best flowers. Mine are planted in pots of last years old pot compost against a south facing wall, and they are doing quite well. I live in the north-west and our weather has been naff so I was quite surprised at the amount of flowers I have had.
Thanks to all of you who have taken the time to respond to my queries about Morning Glory seeds. Appreciate all your comments, suggestions and photos. Taking away different things to experiment with next year. xx
Experimenting is often the way forward @grahamgovan. Mine are mainly pot grown, as it's easier, but the pots are quite big. This year they're in the metal, square containers I have - about 15 inches diameter, and approx a foot in height. 4 canes with three plants at each one. That's why I've fed them more than I would if it was a smaller pot, and with fewer plants. I have a few in a border, as I saved seed last year and had loads of plants, and they've had no attention. They get eaten though - too many slugs here.
I should have said mine are not the free seeds - they're a variety called Black Knight. That may make a difference too
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....
I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
As with so many plants these days, new varieties are produced and the seeds offered for sale. Mine are Granpa Otis and are all done from seed saved/sown/saved over the last 8 years. They always do well for me so I've never bothered to look for any other varieties. Not to say there aren't some other Goodies out there so if you have time and space, it's always worth trying others and see which you prefer and which suit your ground/location.
I love MG and try to grow some each year. Last year I grew some and gave them to my daughter who planted them in a pot under her window. They climbed the eight ft. canes then found a telephone cable which they used to reach the 2nd floor bedroom window. The plants were a bit spindly but the colour of the flowers more than made up for that. Unfortunately my daughter leaves for work very early in the morning and gets home comparatively late so was unable to enjoy the flowers.
Well it was a long time coming but the first flowers appeared today. I have another one in a much sunnier spot which has not started flowering yet but has lot of flower buds ready to pop open
They do look lovely. Mine have just started in the last couple of days - singly but 4 today. So the miracle has happened! Plan to sow earlier next year.
I found the remains of a dead flower on one of my unplanted out seedlings, poor thing. They have struggled to grow, untended, in 9cms pots through the whole of the summer, no watering, hose pipe ban, no feeding etc. I am amazed they are still alive let alone trying to flower. I must do better next year.
I too grew the free seeds makes of spindly growth no flower until a week ago. Now getting a few each day. Shame they don't last though. This mornings one's. In a large tub all at the top of the support.

That's how my garden grows too, Phaidra!
