York Gate Garden (as visited by Adam Frost on GW)

Anyone remember the Gardeners' World episode from early this year when Adam Frost visited York Gate Garden in Leeds?

Well I got invited by the head gardener to have a look behind the scenes, including the succulent trough that he and Adam potted up.

It's a great garden and i'd recommend a visit if you're local. It's run by the charity Perennial.

York Gate isn't a big garden but that is it's charm. I really liked the walk with the planting of Ophiopogon planiscaphus Nigrescens very dramatic and unexpected. If you ask some of the top gardeners what is your favourite garden their answer is often York Gate.

Our Garden Club were celebrating a big anniversary and we decided to have a year of celebrations supporting the gardening charity Perennial.
As I mentioned we visited York Gate and a club holiday was arranged to various gardens including Fullers Mill another Perennial garden which the members thought was amazing. Finally we welcomed Matthew Biggs who was the Chairman of Perennial at the time and sold cards for the charity at our meetings.

This was all some time ago, I also remember visiting The Laskett and we were greeted by Sir Roy Strong he gifted the garden to Perennial on his 85th Birthday.

I have met the head gardener, Jack Ogg a couple of times, and he is doing some really interesting things including: growing Fasicularia bicolour as an epiphyte [ he gave me one which I showed a picture of last summer ] and growing Spanish Moss, which looks amazing "dripping2 from the trees.

@punkdoc I recall a programme where Monty Don visited the US. A great series but the one plant that stood out to me was the Spanish moss. Will be interesting to see if he can get it ti establish. Beautiful and haunting.

Do you know if he brings the tillandsia inside over winter? I've just brought mine in from the greenhouse but I've wondered how hardy it is. When I decide I've got too much of the stuff I'll try experimenting with it but I'm gradually building up my stock at the moment.

If you can keep your head, while those around you are losing theirs, you may not have grasped the seriousness of the situation.

@wildedges I don't know either but when I visited I remember there were lots of plants in pots that woul struggle or die if left out over winter. I also remember a lovely greenhouse I am sure lots of plants spend winter in there.

I watched Gardeners World last week from York Gate so many more experiments with exotics, the head gardener pushes the boundries, that is the essence of the garden, something unusual and exciting at every small turn.
