Why do squirrels go for strawberries, rasperries, nuts etc but they seem to leave tomatoes alone?

They aren't a squirrels favourite food, but they do eat them when they are thirsty.

  • My squirrels were eating the few green cherry tomatoes that were left on my plants when the frosts hit...I let them enjoy them 🤣 presumably if it's their only source of food they like them

  • I've never noticed the squirrels taking tomatoes - red or green.
I've not noticed them take raspberries or anything else fruity, although admittedly those are beyond my viewing limit from the house. They scarper before I reach them, when I open the back door. I'd always assumed damage to soft fruit was by the birds. We have large numbers of sparrows, pigeons and magpies.
However, I have noticed the squirrels digging up bulbs. And making a general nuisance of themselves.

we've got a walnut tree. The squirrels are so fat from eating walnuts, they leave everything else alone at this time of year

They stole all my sweetcorn one year. They took the cobs whole back to the drey.

They usually enjoy my sunflowers. For the last couple of years I’ve observed a squirrel scampering across the top of my fence and getting to the sunflower seeds through the back of the flower and having a feast right there on the fence. Very amusing to see, even though there is a mess always left on the ground below! Ha ha.

My disabled daugter has a shared garden so we don't grow fruit or veg but last Feb we planted 150 tulips. ( yes Feb and they come up beautifully ) As they started to sprout,  the squirrels dug up every one of the bulbs and stole them away leaving gaping holes all over the borders. We had to put wide mesh over the borders to stop the little blighters digging. So, tulip lovers beware !
