Day lily leaves gone brown

EmerionEmerion Posts: 599
I have a clump of day lilies, which I divided and moved last year. They looked fine whilst flowering, but then the leave went mostly brown a few weeks ago. It looks like normal die-back after their season. Should I have cut the leaves down when this started happening, and would that have produced more green leaves?
Carmarthenshire (mild, wet, windy). Loam over shale, very slightly sloping, so free draining. Mildly acidic or neutral.

@Emerion Day lilies leaves can start to yellow or go brown at this time of year. They are one of the first plants to look scruffy in a herbaceous border. Cutting back can create large gaps which is a shame when asters and late flowering perennials are coming to their best.
I used to grow asters in another part of the garden for that reason. Brown leaves or a gap? something to consider. They may regrow just at ground level this autumn but not a certainty.
