Have I over mulched?

My neighbour was having a laurel and cherry tree removed today. I asked if I could have some wood chippings for my borders. I probably should have communicated better but they dumped loads on my drive.

I put it on my borders but it is very thick now and now reading this can suffocate and kill plants/trees. Is there anything I can do beside shovelling most of it off again which I don't really want to do?

Not measured the depth to soil but guessing it  could be 8 or 9 inches in parts. More at the back I piled it higher.

By the way there was quite a bit of leaves mixed in. Perhaps that will rot away quicker.

If there are a lot of leaves in it will disappear quite quickly. If it is only trees and shrubs, just make sure it is sligltly away from the trunks. Probably too late now, but I would have stacked it for a month or two to rot down slightly.

Just keep the mulch away from the trunk of trees, shrubs, roses etc.

Ok thanks, will get out there with a trowel tomorrow and make a few inches gap around the tree trunks/shrub stems.

It will drop in volume fairly quickly and by Spring you will be wondering where it all went.

If you have any left over and you have lawns, it will make great compost mixed with grass clippings and put in your compost bin or in a heap somewhere.
