Is it Ok to have a higgledy piggledy garden full of  reasonably healthy plants that interest me but with no make shape or photogenic design?
I think so.

Well of course. Healthy plants are photogenic and if something is pleasing to you then it has beauty and purpose.
My garden and I live in South Wales.
  • Sounds good to me. Most people garden for ‘their’ enjoyment, not for others (although it’s nice if others appreciate your graft too).

I don't think you need an "excuse" - just enjoy your plants in what ever way makes you happy!

I don't think I could call myself a plantswoman if I didn't have a lifetime of professional or semi-professional expertise behind me. I think of Beth Chatto, Margery Fish and Gertrude Jekyll. They made a contribution. I suspect I will always be just someone who messes about with plants. I'm not even sure I could call myself a "Gardener",  in the proper sense.

I think I'm more of a plantswoman than a gardener.  I'm not much of a gardener at all

Does a plantswoman/ man need qualifications? I didn't realise. I must be a haphazard gardener then.

I would describe a plantswoman as someone who has been interested in growing plants all their lives. Years of accumulated knowledge, through having contact with plants.

I have recently left a  garden that was mine for over thirty years. On the day I left it no longer had my influence, it immediately took on the personality of someone else.
I have worked as a Gardener for 24 years. My latest garden is a new build garden on heavy clay.

I call myself all sorts of things, but OH brings me quickly back to reality.

A common expression in our house, in response to both good ideas and daft ones 🦇
