Perhaps the cool wet July has confused them? In any case you should get the main new growth in spring, and taller canes each year for a few more years at least.
Doncaster, South Yorkshire. Soil type: sandy, well-drained
Sometimes you get late culms appearing after Spring but I've found most of them to be insignificant. If they look good and strong, I'd let them develop. You'll get to know the best ones once they start to emerge in Spring. The width at which they emerge doesn't get any wider and once the growing season is over in June, that's their final height. The side stalks and leaves will continue to thicken up over the summer, I often reduce this too if it gets untidy.
