Growing dahlia from seed

Hello. I tried this for the first time. Some of them turned out lovely. However a couple of buds go like this...

Has anyone experienced this before, and what causes it?

The next picture is from the same plant too, so some success here and there.  Thank you  :)

All of mine are grown from seed and some have been in the ground 5yrs or more. I do get the occasional weird bud and sometimes a flower with only a few petals - it just seems to happen - no idea why, but the flowers are so abundant during the summer a dodgy bud or two is nothing of concern - just cut it off
If it's squishy it may have had rain damage.
    Great looking plants! :)

    Earwigs nibble the buds sometimes.

Thanks. They’re having another flush which is nice.

If you keep removing the dead flower heads it'll keep flowering until the frosts get it.
