Moving raised bed!

Hi we have a north, very slightly east facing garden and the raised bed is on the east side next to a high fence. I am thinking of moving it to the west side where it gets the morning sun. I want to grow veg in it (and chillies) but wondered in your esteemed opinions if it is worth the effort of moving it. The east side of garden gets limited afternoon sun because of a neighbours magnolia tree. All thoughts welcomed! Thank you.

  • So these pics taken at the same time of day 11am and the east side was dark up until then. It does get some sun in the afternoon. The west side was in the sun from early.

Hi @Potty Lottie - west facing will generally get a bit more hot sun than an east facing site, but it's always down to what else is around to alter that.
If your west facing border would be the bit in that last pic, there's a fair amount of large shrubs etc there, which will also affect the bed - especially in terms of moisture, unless you can bring it out and away from them. It also depends on what you were intending growing. Chillies aren't always successful outdoors for example, so your location and climate are factors.
It would make it easier to manage the bed if it was further in, as you would have both sides to work it from, and could also make it wider. That depends on just how much room you have though  :)
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
  • I think that was what we were thinking although I have a bed that runs south facing in a north facing garden (does that make sense?) and we are watching it and it seems to be in the for a lot of day so maybe that’s a better option??

Yes - my front garden is north, north west facing, but the bit furthest from the house gets a fair amount of sun in summer, as that's south to south east facing, and it's far enough away from the building so doesn't get a lot of shade.  There's also nothing much to the western side of it to block that.
Less hours of sun in spring and autumn of course when the sun isn't high enough  :)
You could always try both, depending on budget etc.

  • We have bitten the bullet and are in the process of moving it to the south facing end of our smallish garden, hence why I didn’t reply for a while…. One job leads to another to another! Much digging up and replanting, moving of composts etc and we are nearly there! Thanks for your advice though. Much appreciated. ☺️
