Pear Rust

BenCottoBenCotto Posts: 4,718
Is there anyone able to comment on the phytopathology of pear rust?

My two trees are infected with rust, but not too badly. In the past couple of weeks I have picked off 95% of the spotted leaves, few of them having reached the ‘pustule’ stage. Is doing this worthwhile or it a waste of time?

I realise that the ideal solution is to remove the host juniper tree(s) but short of sending up a drone to see which gardens within a half mile radius have them and would they be so kind as to chop them down, I don’t see that as an option.

My thinking is that removing to the black waste bin the rusted leaves will mean fewer spores will get carried back to the juniper. But if it is only me doing it are my efforts futile? Two generations ago and before, our village was noted for its orchards and strawberry fields so there are still plenty of pear trees about.

Every little helps.  Yes, burn or black bin them.  I had pear tree midge for a number of years , picked the affected pears  off and disposed of them. It seems to have cleared .
I'm doing my best for those with box tree hedges. I must have drowned 30 of the box tree moths  so far this year.  They come to the light trap at night and I help them into a jar with  some water and washing up liquid.
