Tree roots sprouting after relocating

Hi,

In spring I moved a young Amelanchier tree from one garden to another, and I'm finding that the roots are sprouting. How can I prevent this from happening?

It may be a survival strategy.
Based in Sussex, I garden to encourage as many birds to my garden as possible.

I've read that it could be stress, due to moving it, or some damaged roots from moving it. I'm thinking probably both.
But how do I stop it or control it?

Otherwise, the tree has been ok all summer. Not much wood growth, but I expected that after moving it. It flowered nicely, leaves have been generally fine and even had some berries.

It's trying to grow into an amelanchier thicket...  you need to pull the suckers off from the root, rather than cutting them off, or they will re-grow.  I'm afraid I don't know any way to prevent more from growing - though I imagine they will become less as the tree settles down and puts out new roots.
Since 2019 I've lived in east Clare, in the west of Ireland.

Yes - just pull them off. They're inclined to do that.
It won't affect the tree adversely unless you keep letting them grow, when you'll lose the shape it has just now.
Keep it well watered though - the soil looks very dry, and mulch regularly to help the soil structure and keep weeds away, and moisture in.  :)
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
  • Thanks for your replies and advice. I'll just keep pulling them off then! Cheers
