Wisteria, old leaves yellow, new green

Hi all, I have a couple of wisteria's I planted in the ground almost two months ago that have old leaves that are yellowing and new ones growing in green.  My best guess is that I didn't amend the soil enough and the clayey soil here is holding in too much moisture, but it doesn't seem to be directly in line. So perhaps it's a lack of nitrogen or many of the things I'm not even aware of?  We are experiencing quite the cricket infestation at the moment which explains all the nibbled leaves.

I do have a woven polypropylene weed barrier over the soil with rocks over that.

Any help on what's keeping these from being a healthy vibrant green color and growing as fast as they were would be much appreciated

Have you watered it since planting?  It's so close to that fence it may be in a rain shadow and just thirsty.    Even if you've had some rain you need to water new plantings at least once a week during their first summer and water generously enough for the water to seep down deep, thus encouraging the roots to follow.

try giving a good drink of 10 to 15 litres of water poured slowly so it sinks in rather than running off.   Once well hydrated in a week or two you could try a dose of liquid seaweed feed to provide extra nutrients.

The other thing you need to do quickly is release it from those flimsy canes and give it some proper support.  They grow fast and strong and eventually develop tree like trunks and branches.  Those canes and that fence will not be anywhere near strong enough.

  • Hi Obelixx, I believe it's been getting enough water as it's planted at the end of the runoff point from my yard so with the frequent rain we've been getting the soil has always felt moist, but I haven't been giving it any additional nutrients, I'll look into that liquid seaweed feed!  I was planning on creating some new structure that would grow it up over the gate to the house itself, so I'll get moving on that as well and hopefully it will start looking a bit happier.  Thanks for your feedback!
