Strawberry runners

Hi folks,

I no Monty did an article about strawberry runners but I just need reminding.

I have runner's with 2 or more new plants growing. I'm planning to pin the new ones into pots over the next couple of days.

Is it worth pinning the first on the runner then discarding the rest of doing them all?

Many thanks

The first baby will be the biggest, so if you have enough of those just use them, but if not using the others is also fine.

    The more the merrier!

I'd be taking both the free plants on offer ;)

There is no need to go to the hassle of pinning them down.

If the offspring is about index-finger length in size with just root nodules on the base (rudimentary roots which have not yet properly formed) then you can sever it from the parent plant and pot it up straight away. Strawberry plants are like weeds - the offspring will grow even with the inauspicious start.

The only caveat is that the crown (feathery centre of the plant) should be undamaged when potting up.

  • One presumes then I can just leave them outside when I've potted them up?

Yes - runners are fine outdoors @Have a go Nick  :)
I don't grow them so much nowadays, but when I pegged runners down into pots, the post just got tucked away in a sheltered spot until the following year, when they were potted on or planted out. Those first size pots were usually 3 inch ones, and they coped with everything our winters here threw at them, as I often forgot where they were!
Even if/when they looked dead, they sprang back to life as soon as conditions improved in spring.
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...

Here is how I propagate them in picture form:

Yes, you can leave them outdoors - in dapple sun light is best.

I will do a progress update in about a months' time just to prove that it does work.

    About a month later...

    See, it does actually work!

Don't worry about the leaves at this stage as they're expendable. What is important is the crown and the root system of each plant.
