Is this Hosta on an Autumn downturn?

PlantmindedPlantminded Posts: 3,580
I've got several Hostas in containers which have all flowered and are still looking healthy. This one's leaves started to fade last week.  Does it think Autumn's on the way or should I be doing some further investigations?  Any thoughts much appreciated, thank you.

Don't forget that vine weevil grubs adore Hosta roots.
  • Doesn't look too bad, wonder if it got a bit dry for a bit. Prune off any faded leaves, I'd expect more growth to come up and look better. A couple of miniatures of mine looking a bit tired because I didn't keep up with their water demands in a very bright location.

Thank you @Palustris and @amancalledgeorge, I'm going to look for vine weevil grubs and will also do some pruning as you have suggested, very helpful!

  • And if you have weevils, sadly most of us do, dress your potted hostas with some gravel it seems to work in stopping them laying eggs...fingers crossed haven't lost one yet to them unlike other plants.

Thank you @amancalledgeorge, I've done that on all my pots but the sneaky pests can sometimes find a way in!  Just out of interest, I often find adults near the drainage holes and am wondering whether these are the eggs that have hatched above and worked their way downwards or do the adults hide there after laying their eggs?

  • Hmmm probably a hiding place...I tend to find them resting on leaves late at night... presumably looking for a snack.

The adults like to spend daylight hours hiding in the dark, so the drainage holes in pots would be a favoured sort of place. At least then you know where to look to find them for the big boot!.
The gravel needs to be at least 2 cms thick by the way.

Autumn begins in September as far as I’m aware
