I think it's a Eucryphia. I've been to RHS Harlow Carr today and we were admiring theirs, in full flower.
Doncaster, South Yorkshire. Soil type: sandy, well-drained

Yes, Eucryphia, there’s one in our local botanic gardens.  A real stand out tree at this time of year!
    Wirral. Sandy, free draining soil.

Yes , Eucryphia x Nymansensis 'Nymansay' ; had one for 35+ years ; flowers reliably every July/August ; the hardiest of them all and an excellent 'bee-magnet' .
  • Thanks for all your comments. The tree was photo'ed in St Austell, Cornwall.
