Thanks everyone, very helpful but I don't think I'll try with them again - neither of us are that keen on them. If something fails I just like to know why.
This is my third year of growing vegetables following my retirement and understanding and growing vegetables is a bit more diifficult than I ever imagined it would be.
Thinking about it I've had very few failures this year. I must be getting to know what will/won't grow where we are.
We have just planted pak choi, kail and swedes which will see us through until late Autumn. I won't be trying to grow any winter veg. this year as this seems impossible where we live.
At about 750 feet on the western edge of The Pennines. Clay soil.
I have never had a problem with growing courgettes until this year. I lost 2 of my seedling plants before planting out. Planted the remaining 2 which then went on to roduce dozens of male fruit before almost dying. One has barely recovered the last plant now has 2 baby courgettes but I am not sure if they will mature or rot and drop off.
Always the defining factor @InTheMoorlands. No point growing stuff if you don't like eating it .
We did them this year to use as an alternative to pasta, because of my younger daughter's health problems, but we weren't that impressed. They're certainly economical compared to buying them, but I don't know if I'll do them next year either. I'll see how I feel. Probably change my mind twenty times between now and then!
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....
I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
Cut into rounds, fried in very light olive oil with a squeeze of lemon and a bit black pepper. Or the same without the lemon and last minute addition of dolcelatte and drop of pasta water to add to that fresh pasta - wonderful veg...
Yorkshire, ex Italy and North East coast. Growing too old for it!
