    Thanks for all your comments, a range of opinions! We have already planted three silver birch trees there, to provide a screen from our neighbours, and I'm planning on a blue/orange colour palette. All perennials, with maybe a rose (Lady of Shallotte) or two in there, too. I'll have a look at prices, and see what's available, but quite like the idea of popping some more established plants in to form a framework, then buying some 9cm pots to grown on over the winter. Thanks also for teaching me a new acronym, @Loxley, not one I've come across before! 
    PS Lawn has now had its post-holiday mow...
