Should I cut back salvia and lavender now?

fizzylizfizzyliz Posts: 398
The bigger salvia I cut half that had finished some time back and got a half second flush. Not sure when supposed to leave the old bits on for winter protection? Or may it bloom again?

The lavenders seem to have gone quite pale all over and not looking brilliant to be honest. Any advice appreciated.

I deadhead the salvia I have, but I only grow the totally hardy one. The others need cuttings taken or protection etc, so I don't grow those. It's usually better to remove the spent flowers just to prevent the plant spending energy on those.  :)
Don't grow lavender, as I really loathe it, but you can certainly cut back the spent heads, and a tiny bit of the green growth if it's completely finished. They tend to get very woody over time, so it's worth looking at taking cuttings to grow on, so that you can replace the original plant[s] in future.  :)
Is that the French lavender - L. stoechas? They're usually less hardy than the other varieties, so you may need to lift that for autumn/winter, depending on where you live and what your climate is like.

I grow similar salvias (Mainacht) and find that if you cut the flower spike off just above a pair of leaves below the spike as it's finishing flowering more spikes appear. I think I get about 3-4 flushes of flowers from mine over the season.
