Just how slow growing are leeks?

as per title...just how slow growing are they?

These were started in modules on 25th March, moved into 12.5cm pots early June and then in to the ground on 18th July.

They are growing....but slowly. Should I be expecting them to be bigger by now?

Adjoining beds with same soil and compost have ben productive, so I don't think it can be that.

  • Ours are always slow growing even though they have been in the ground for a very long time. Others in the village already have good size leeks. We are happy to wait and harvest later in the year.

I do not know if this is still the case but my grandfather used to dig up his late potatoes, rake the soil level and using a dibble start making rows of holes and dropped in his leak plants he had grown from seed. I do not know when he started them off. Then poured in water to fill the holes with soil. Always worked for him. The point being the picture shows almost the size of plants he planted in the autumn allowing any frost to harden them off.

depending on variety leeks can take 130-180 days from when you start
     the seeds.

It was advice on leeks that got me started on Chicken Manure Pellets.  I always drop in a few pellets before inserting the leek seedling and, although slow, they usually do well.
