Shrub ID please

This is growing in an overgrown area that has recently been cleared, not entirely sure what it is so reluctant to remove. Could anyone help to identify this shrub please?

It looks like a pyracantha to me.
If it is there will be some vicious thorns on the branches.

Hmm.  I wonder if it's the Cockspur Thorn, Crataegus crus-galli...  does it have any thorns under the branches?  The fruit look like the unripe haws on my native hawthorn hedge.  Perhaps @Silver surfer might have a better idea.

    You're probably right, @Pete.8 - I haven't looked at a pyracantha for a long time...   :)

  • @Pete.8 & @Liriodendron Thank you both for responding to my post. I have looked closely at the branches and yes there are thorns on them. Thank you for your help in identifying the shrub, I shall keep this for the wildlife to enjoy.
