We had a garden with concrete paths that had been put down by a previous owner who hadn't treated the bindweed first so it came up round the edges. It took a couple of years of applying the gel as Fairygirl described but it did largely get rid of it. Do as much as you can for the next couple of months, then plant your borders in late autumn (always a good time to plant anyway), but don't crowd your plants too close together for now, to give yourself room to keep on top of it for a while. It will work though, if you're vigilant
Gardening on the edge of Exmoor, in Devon
“It's still magic even if you know how it's done.”
We are plagued by it down our allotment as it covered the plot when we took it over and it still comes from next doors plot as they don't go there more than twice a year.
I don't use chemicals and in the areas that I've managed to pretty much clear from it, it has taken 4-5 years of deep digging each year. I used to get about a bucket of the roots every square metre, to a depth of 2 ft. It goes really deep and is so hard to eradicate that it would be very difficult in a garden.
I've seen Charles Dowding, in his no dig garden, manages to get on top of it within a season or two without chemicals but it's very hard.
We had some in our back garden, not a plagued but an annoying amount, and we got round that mostly with landscape fabric but it's still there after 5-10 years if you pull up the fabric.
