Hydrangea not flowering

Hello again. I rescued a hydrangea from my local garden centre ‘bargain’ section. It had two blue/purple when we purchased but has not flowered since. It’s in a pot - sun most of the day. Have not trimmed it back - we just re-potter it. How can I make it happier so it flowers ? Thanks !

    When did you rescue it?

Hydrangea only flower once a year. 😊

  • A couple of months ago. Should we just leave it alone to see what happens next year? Would it be better in the garden ? Thank you !

If it was in the bargain section then it may have suffered a degree of neglect and will need time to recover and sometimes the plants in the bargain section are the ones that couldn't keep up with the stronger plants.......they will potter along nicely but never be as showy as their more robust brethren.
Your hydrangea will be happier in the ground in the long run so if you can find a space for it in the garden, that would be great.

It would be better in the ground. Very few are happy in pots long term, and they need a lot more care and attention in a container.
I'd keep it out of direct sun too - semi shade is far better.  :)
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
  • Thank you ! Semi shade no problem in our garden !
  • Agreed. I bought a hydrangea in the bargain section last year. Didn't flower all summer. I ended up cutting off all leaves and pruning it down and it is flowering very nicely this year.
  • We (my wife) bought one a couple of years back. Planted it in the ground in the north-facing side of the house. Tried to flower last year, but unsuccessful.
This year, it's absolutely full of flowers, and a joy to have.
Be patient, plant out, keep it well watered in summer (not a problem here in Kent this year), and enjoy the results.
    We have!!

I have a white hydrangea (sorry, don't know the name) I bought at the supermarket some years ago- four, five? as a twig. I potted it on as it grew and it has been in a half barrel sized pot for three or so years. I water it with copious amounts of water, feed it regularly and it's thriving. Maybe from is said here it'll conk out one day, but it is a joy for me, the flowers are gorgeous and I love it.
I wish your plant well for year(s) to come, @rowlandscastle444.
