Hello @stevenwill50okyUlQMu and welcome to the forum 😊

    Are there any trees nearby?

I should think it's very likely.
Dordogne and Norfolk. Clay in Dordogne, sandy in Norfolk.

I had raised beds not far from a large ash tree. The bottoms of the beds were lined with weed control fabric but the ash tree roots pushed up through that into the lovely most soil in the beds. After a couple of years  the raised beds were too congested to use … we scrapped them and dug proper beds into the soil … at least we could dig those over and remove the fine roots before they grew thicker and stronger.

Yes.  My RB was a huge tractor tyre about 10 feet from a large ash tree.  I tried to weed proof it with several thicknesses of white goods packing cases - but the tree won in the end.
