Garya elliptica James Roof

ok.  Planted three in a shallow slope next to a wood.  One is OK.  One is sick.  One might be dead.  What am I doing wrong?

    I’d say that you didn’t prepare the ground before planting . You need to take all the weeds/ grass away and plant deep enough to stand up on its own before staking it .

    They were dug into a hole twice as deep and wide as the pot, then back filled humus rich top soil… but the original soil is very sandy, with clay…

    You may of unintentionally created a sump for water to fill they'll not take any water logging. It looks dead just whip it out and have a look .
