Thanks for your responses. I did think about the hort. college, I must try and find someone to get in touch with. I thought they would be closed for the summer at present. To give the students time to go surfing and whatever else they do on the beaches down here. Wind surfing, paddle boarding, para gliding, chilling etc. You know the kind of thing, the essentials of life.
My sister seems to have recently found a chap on the Isle of Wight who came a couple of times, did a good job of clearing her garden, no plants, was given several old tools and has disappeared after cash in hand payment.
My daughter called in yesterday, told me she had spoken to an elderly gentleman living near her who opens his garden occasionally. Sha asked him about the gardener he uses. No luck there, he isn't taking on any new clients as he is 67 and he doesn't do weeding!
I live in the middle of fields and I haven't seen any local gardens showing signs of work being done anywhere near me. Apart from Heligan. One of my 2 neighbours is a chap who works away from home most of the time, he owns the fields in front and behind me and has never done anything with them in the last 15 years. His gardening philosophy is sow the seeds and let them get on with it. My next door neighbour has more ground to cope with than she can manage, 2 pre teen children to raise, works full time as a vetinarary nurse, has 2 horses and a flock of chickens to look after. She and her teen daughter have had a go at growing some veg. in containers so has her hands full. The daughter did come and ask me if they could grow a squash in my garden. I said Yes but did warn her it was very overgrown, she didn't come back.
I have spent a fair bit of my time incarcerated indoors, on crutches, you have my sympathy Lizzie, with casts and boots. A broken ankle plated and pinned then removed, eventually followed by 2 replacement joints at 6 year intervals, 2 replacement knees and just recently a heart attack which I didn't know I had. At the moment I am struggling with the side effects of the medication I have been asked to take. Rampant stomach upset and stomach cramps. And I thought I was doing so well at 82! I even contemplated taking on an allotment a few years ago, thank goodness I didn't.
Down here in Cornwall it is very common for individuals to work for themselves without getting any qualifications, so many self employed in so many trades. It seems to be a case of trial and error and wasted money for a lot of people. When I get quotes for work I always let them know I am asking more than one person to look at the job. It is interesting to see how many do not bother to even come and look at what needs to be done.ie. double glazing, conservatories, electrical jobs. I always get at least 3 quotes to do a comparison and get a feel for the company.
