That's also important for new shrubs and trees in particular, especially if they've been planted through the summer months. This is where your location and climate come into play. If the shrubs are all crowded together too, there's more competition for moisture, and that matters even more if they're large specimens. It's the main reason plants fail to thrive if you're in a drier, hotter location, and it's why autumn/winter is easier for planting them if that's the case.
Photos would be very helpful in giving further advice. We have no idea how you've planted anything, how you're looking after them, or what size the plants are
