Smelly water butt

  • Ok,
think the sun may have some effect with the issue.
My 2 butts are against a 8’ fence protecting the butts from the sun from midday/early afternoon onwards. And although theres a bush giving some protection from early morning till afternoon.
But the summer sun being high, with little protection to the tops of the butts getting warm.

Thought of breaking some pallets and have like beer barrel wall and wooden lid cover.

Would the wood insulate the butts from the sun/heat.

Or any other tips to insulate them ?

Not sure about sun causing problems as I have 3 butts in full sun most of the day with no problems at all and they have been there for years. Only problem I had was having to replace a base as it was cracking up and disintegrating.
  • I brought this shading up because the water in the butts by the evening can be lukewarm.

I find it amusing how we're perfectly fine brewing stinky comfrey juice; broadcasting hoof and horn on our beds; messing about with chicken and horse manure...but a stinky water butt, heavens forbid!

    Ok,
Rightly or wrongly, I have emptied the butts and washed out. Replaced the down pipe collector to a filtered collector. Got a pair of Daughters unused tights, cut the foot off, crushed a lumpwood charcoal and placed in the foot, washed the dust out.
Now placed the foot with charcoal over the inlet pipe in the butt, so that rainwater is filtered by charcoal and the foot being finer than the mesh filter. Rightly or wrongly.??
Also wrapped the butt lids in plastic bin bags to stop leaves, slugs and flower blossoms falling the gaps in the lids.

Sounds like over-kill to me.  How often will you renew?  There are several types of activated charcoal.  The type used to decolour sugar is not the same as that used for diet or for Koi.
