i have recently been gifted this plant as they no longer had space, however it seems it has had better days. I was wondering what plant this is and how to save it?
Thank you

It looks like some kind of Philodendron.

Google suggests Philodendron Hope as a possibility

    Billericay - Essex

That sounds plausible @Pete.8. It certainly has a philodendrony vibe.

As I doubt you know how long the plant has been in that pot, I would recommend repotting the plant in some houseplant compost and cutting back all the distressed foliage (ie the long limp stems). You will  need to go up a pot size if the roots are filling the present pot. Keep in out of direct sunlight.....few houseplants can take the glare. The new compost will have enough plant food to last the rest of the summer but after that it will rely on you to keep it fed. The instructions are always to feed during the growing season but as houseplants can keep on going all year if they are in a good position and warm enough, then it doesn't hurt to give them a small amout of plant food during the winter.
