A mixture of rain and age made my nicotoana look a mess. I've cut off all the flower stalks. Are the plants likely to bloom again this year or are they for the compost heap
I haven't binned them. They're under the radar so to speak so I'll leave them for a while at least. @Topbird. No problem seeing who's right. Interesting experiment. Will report back to you and Lyn if anything remotely interesting occurs. I really should bin the antirrhinum too but there's a few buds at the top of the stems and there's nothing in the garden centres but those old ladies plume plants and chrysanthemums. Buying chrysanthemums means you've accepted that summer is over. I'm not quite ready for that.
I too have a self-seeded red nicotiana in a wedge in the paving. It flowers throughout the season and has come back year after year for the past 3 years. If it gets too untidy, I remove the spent flowers. This year, I have another one, white this time. Another self-seeded one in the paving is a calendula. It's so cheery, I don't want to remove it.
Oxford. The City of Dreaming Spires.
And then my heart with pleasure fills,
And dances with the daffodils (roses). Taking a bit of liberty with Wordsworth

I have, before now, cut nicotiana really quite hard back to about 3" but always to a node, bud, whatever and had a second flush of flowers.
