Growing a rambling rose without a support?

I have just planted a white rambling rose in the middle of a front garden in a little lawn. Do I need to add a bamboo cane obelisk or will it grow into a large bush? Thanks.

If it's a rambler it will grow huge and swallow your little lawn. You need to buy a bush rose or a small climber and an obelisk.

Wrong plant for your site. Clue's in the title  :)
You need a big wall, or building, or similar for it @whiskyonThames .
There's a dedicated rose thread on the forum, so if you ask there, or just look through the thread, you'll get ideas and advice.
    Here it is:
It's a lot of pages, so probably better to go to the last one and ask for some ideas  :)

It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
  • If it just swallows the whole lawn then I'm not bothered much, so long as it grows into a big bush.

It won't be a bush. It will be long, tangled stems like brambles and most ramblers only flower once a year.

What is the name of the white rambler you have please?   names are important.. thanks..
    East Anglia, England
  • Oh, I threw out the label and just dumped it in the ground, so I don't know what brand it is. I'll just get another cheaper one from the garden centre, and replace the compost, of course. I know that the compost will have to be replaced. Thanks.

I think if you want any new rose to thrive, you need a bit of help re how it's planted and how to care for it.
If you ask @Marlorena or the others on that thread, ,they can advise you as to what would be suitable for your site and conditions.
Plants need proper care - it's not quite the same as buying a vase or a cushion  ;)
