Acer delivered as a present, but what’s wrong with it?

This arrived in the post as a present (label said £90)…. But the leaves look shredded, and a bit sparse on the top branches. should I tell the person who gave it to me, and send it back, or just leave it til it regrows next year? Worried I might be importing a pest!

I would. £90 is extortionate unless it's very large or very rare
    In London. Keen but lazy.

The pictures don't convey enough detail to make a proper assessment.

Take at least one picture showing the whole tree to give us an idea of size, scale and the overall condition of the tree.

Then, zoom in and take some macro shots of what you think the problem areas are.

Ring Paramount and ask them what they want to do about it.
They probably don't have to deal with you as you're not the buyer but it would save getting your friend involved in the first instance. They might play nice if you explain.

I agree - the photos aren't clear enough to determine anything well enough, but if it was being sent to you as a gift, it's still the supplier you would contact. A gift doesn't usually come via the buyer - it comes direct. Small amounts of damage on a fully foliaged specimen, which I'm assuming is fairly substantial, is to be expected though.

You'll need better photos for the supplier, as per @pinut's description.  :)
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
