Something mysterious is lifting up my turf !

Hello
I spread 10 turf rolls along my garden fence to stop rain water splash damage to the fence panels (this is on the outside of the garden facing the road).
Everyday evening I see that some of the rolls have been lifted partly and turned over!
Could this be an animal?
Thank you.

  • This happened to us when we laid some turf.  It turned out to be crows.

Thieves round here have been known to roll them up in the night and take them.
  • My guess would be foxes who are curious to see what is underneath.

    I my garden.

What size are the pieces of turf if they're being completely turned over @mom.mom.num.num
Or is it just a corner that's being turned? If so, you could peg it down until it establishes.

You'd need very large areas of turf for water not to reach a fence, so I'm not sure it would work anyway.  A fence within a few feet of a road will easily get water splashed on it.

    Hello Fairygirl.

New fence was put in. Existing wild grass - along the fence - was all gone after the old fence was ripped out.

There is plenty of wide land between fence and the road. Splash is not from the road. Splash was from the mud that was exposed after old fence was pulled out.

So 1/2 meter wide grass rolls should be enough. 1/2 metre wide was the only space that missing grass. Wild grass continues to flourish in the rest of the open space between fence and the road.

Thanks for thinking through this :)

Ah - thanks for that explanation @mom.mom.num.num. I thought you meant water from the road.  :)
The new turf should knit in and root over the next couple of months, so perhaps pegging it down would be the easiest solution. You can get big plastic pegs with a serrated edge. I used them for netting over an area I was creating a new lawn in - ironically  ;)

I can't recall where I got them, but it may just have been B&Q or similar. Even large nails [about 3 or 4 inches] would do the job, and easy to remove later on.  :)

This sort of thing - although that's quite pricey for the job. I only bought a small amount so maybe online is worth looking at

You could use tent pegs if you have them.
  • I think whatever it was, has now lost its curiousity. Phew!
It waned over the days and now it seems the creature is not interested to lift it up anymore.
I might use tent pegs if it re-occurs.
Thank you everyone for the help :)

Glad it seems to have resolved itself @mom.mom.num.num  :)
