Plant / Flower Identification

Hello,

I'm not usually stumped when identifying plants but I am with this one sent to me by a friend in the Emerald Isle.

I know the leaves are quite unusual in that the stem appears to go through them and are known as perfoliate leaves however I am at a loss with the flower / plant. Could it be Lythrum salicaria - commonly known as purple loosestrife??

Yes I would agree with Lythrum salicaria. Must have a damp soil.

I don't, the leaves aren't right. I agree that it is a Lythrum Salicaria. I saw one today and it looked like that.

Just to add I did think at first it was an orchid and then changed my mind. It is the yellow stamens that confirm it is Lythrum salicaria.

I think if you look carefully you will find they are just stalkless rather than perfoliate.
